  • Staff Monitoring and Review Course Programs:

At the course level LCM will operate for the purposes of quality assurance through the Course Committees consisting of Course Leader, student representative and Director of Studies/Principal, the staff and teachers committees. All courses will hold an annual review comprising of the details of course reviews held throughout the year and to confirm that course documentation has been completed, procedures followed and action points addressed

    A.Internal Review Procedures

Existing programs of study are reviewed regularly. The reviews aim to expose all facets of teaching in academic departments and subject to peer review in a constructive non-confrontational manner so as to assure that students are set and enabled to achieve appropriate standards in the subject area. This requires the department and the LCM administration to prepare a review document supported by statistical data. The concerned committee reviews these and all the written material and discusses them with the Head of Department and the Director of Studies before submitting a report and recommendations for action.

    B. Departmental Review Procedures

Departments rely upon a number of means of monitoring the effectiveness of existing programs of study, some formal, others informal. These include examination/coursework performance of students, student feedback via tutorials with personal/subject tutors, Course Committees, the Self-evaluation and Feedback student questionnaire exercises and reports of external examiners. A senior member of staff is appointed to be responsible for within each department/division.

    C. External Examiners/Moderators

Comparability of standards with other providers of equivalent level programs is principally ensured through the appointment of external examiners/moderators from appropriate institutions. LCM has strict criteria for the appointment of external examiners, requiring them to be persons of seniority and experience, who are able to command authority. LCM appoints external examiners who are of high standing in their field, generally with considerable experience of examining at the required level in an institution of similar academic profile to the College. External examiners monitor the standards of assessment through approval of examination questions, determination that internal marking and classifications are of an appropriate standard and consistency, participation, in some instances in viva examinations and endorsement of the final examination results. They are asked to report comprehensively on the degree program, including the appropriateness of the objectives and learning outcomes, the methods of assessment and the overall structure of the course and are explicitly requested to comment on the comparability of the degree programs with those at their own institution. External examiners/moderators are required to send their reports to the Director of Studies. Upon receipt they are scrutinized by the relevant committee inclusive of the concerned Course Leader, Tutor, and the Director of Studies, which will identify any points of concern raised by the External Examiner/Moderator. The report is then referred to the LCM Principal, with a request to offer suggestions on the points identified. The suggestion may involve further assurances from a department on the resolution of a particular problem. Following consideration of the reports the LCM Registry will send a copy of the departmental response to the external examiner/moderator together with a copy of the relevant minute of the committee meeting where the report was considered.

    Quality Assurance at Student Level:

At student level LCM will seek to implement a system of quality assurance through the student assessment, feedback/self-evaluation systems, inclusive of the following: i. All full time students will be allocated a personal tutor. ii. Every personal tutor is obliged to review learners’ progress regularly against an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which has details of qualifications on entry and personal targets for achievements. iii. There should be at least 2 ILP reviews per year iv. Formal complaints by students will be made through the complaints/ suggestion process as outlined in the LCM Student Handbook v. All students will have the opportunity to complete student satisfaction surveys at key times during their program usually after enrolment and Induction and then later in the year usually in March/April vi. Student representatives will be elected to the Course Committees vii. LCM will encourage the integration of students with disabilities. Students with learning difficulties will be offered individualized programs of study to assist them where necessary in line with the College’s Equal Opportunities Policy

    5. Staff Development and Review

LCM has a staff development policy with mechanisms for continuing professional development through appraisal and qualitative changes (see for details of the CPD schematic model). The College requires its staff to perform to high standards and to contribute towards the effective operation of the LCM policies. To help achieve this, LCM is committed to providing staff development opportunities for all staff and to foster a learning and development environment which encourages staff to take responsibility for their own development. Staffs with educational development expertise are employed to teach on these programs and work with individuals and groups of staff on learning and teaching initiatives in departments/divisions, with specific responsibilities for the design, delivery, assessment and evaluation of programs within their departments or divisions The LCM Principal is expected to play a lead role in all aspects of the College’s functional activities and programs, promote teamwork and involve staff in policy development. For the purposes of quality assurance and planning, all staff is expected to communicate effectively and develop productive relationships with students, external agencies and other stakeholders. The key to development and quality assurance is professional competence and commitment across a wide range of management skills which are expected to echo throughout the functional mechanism of the College as an institution of learning. In all staff briefings, meetings the priorities for development, inclusive of internal/external trainings or additional qualifications are discussed and agreed with all staff, which is later on taken up with the LCM Board of Governors as appropriate. Staff development reviews are made on the basis of records for the purposes evaluation and planning processes. All staff are encouraged to participate in the review processes and provided with opportunities to evaluate their own work in discussion with the Principal and to identify weaknesses/challenges and acknowledge particular strengths. Staff development is matched to the identified needs of individuals and of the College

    6. Quality Assurance of Learning Opportunities

Library, computing, laboratory and other teaching accommodation facilities are all considered by the appropriate LCM committee. Resource implications are also considered in reviews of existing programs by the QARC. Resources for teaching are covered in the statement which every department has to produce for the annual planning round. Departments must confirm that they have sufficient resources to teach any additional planned students without adversely affecting teaching quality. LCM has a Library’s Support Assistant who has an overall responsibility for quality assurance procedures in respect of library resources and services. LCM Library Committee, consisting of the LCM Principal, Departmental/Sectional heads, is to advise on general library policy and on the co-ordination of library facilities.

    Internal Quality Assurance Mechanisms

All students admitted to our College have to take aptitude tests. This is used in evaluating their entry levels in their chosen course. ● Lecturers provide lesson plans for each course subject; this is attached to the teaching strategies/tools/syllabus outline and given to the students at beginning of the course. ● Monthly assessments are done using class tests and assignments; this forms a strong basis for measuring student progression. ● There are THREE levels at which students can be counseled: ❖ Through the Director of Studies, ❖ Through Course Tutors, ❖ Through the LCM Head of Courses ● Students fill in quarterly feedback form, which is used in evaluating the course delivery, their progression and overall, the quality of the services that we offer to the student as an institution of learning.

Students are also required to fill in a Course feedback Form ever term after completion of each course in which they evaluate the course, the quality and style of teaching ● Evaluate course progress by organizing Course Committees in each course, co-opting students’ representatives along with the tutors/course leader in each course ● There is a monthly/term-wise staff meeting held to discuss student issues and other admin/student matters ● For on-campus courses LCM has also provisions for External Moderators ● The LCM examination team reviews examination results, (with Director of Studies, Head of Course/Course Leader, and the concerned tutors) in order to note of issues raised by examiners. ● The Principal/Director of Studies write peer report, monitoring the performance of the teaching personnel, taking note of the pattern of interactions as well as observing the feedback processes in the classrooms between the teachers and the taught.
